The second quarter meeting was held on June 12, 2004.
I arrived early and began to setup my PC which was running
AmigaForever 6.0. The power supply had died, so I spent
the first bit replacing that with a new one. During
the repair, Cameron showed up with his reciever and
spare speakers (just incase anyone needed them). I soon
had AmigaForever 6.0 running and connected to the broadband
cable connection. I had additional copies onhand for
other members who ordered them.
Michael showed up next followed shortly by Jon. Loran
and his dad soon arrived, and he brought his customized
Mac Classic for showing. He had it upgraded with an
external NIC and plugged it into the broadband router
for internet connections. Jon had AmigaForever 6.0 running
on his laptop. That was cool to see.
Shortly before noon, Doug showed up with his AmigaOne
running OS4 and was followed closely by Scott bringing
his AmigaOne, complete with a very nice Dell flat panel
monitor. Doug was able to show us the OS4 native version
of his thumbnailer application. Also we were able to
see the USB pen drive in action. Doug formatted mine
under OS4 and it worked great. Scott had one last go
at a game of Majesty before wiping out Linux to start
an OS4 install. Pizza was ordered in for lunch and the
UBoot update began.
First of all, UBoot was really simple to update. Just
follow the outline in the OS4 install guide. Scott had
the good forsight to print out the PDF version before
arriving. There was initially a problem when booting
to the install CD, but using a different CD-Rom drive
helped to resolve the issue. It was easy to tell when
the failure occured, as we connected the AmigaOne's
serial output to my PC's terminal program to view the
process. The intallation went fairly quick, and in no
time, OS4 was booting on the AmigaOne for the first
time. We were approaching the cut off time as the shop
was closeing, so the meeting ended there. But it was
cool getting to see OS4 installed from scratch for the
first time. This will surely help some of the other
members when they are faced with the same task in the
future.
Thanks to all of the members who attended and brought
things to demo or participate. I look forward to the
next time. Maybe by then I will be able to join the
Elite Ranks of OS4 Pre-release Owners.
PS. I neglected to mention that we had a couple of
boxes of C-64 software and manuals which were donated
to the group. Several members found goodies to claim
for free from the box.
